An Example of Contradictions that Keep Employees off Balance While Insulating Executives

The Acknowledgement Form

Q: Do I have to sign this?

A: You do if you want to keep working here.

It is designed to show that the leaders of the organization provided employees with required information and guidance.  Written in legalese and often lengthy, employees seldom have enough time to fully read the documents, much less understand them.

Yet, if they fail to adhere to the new policies, rules, or requirements, they can lose their jobs.  If they don't sign the form, they will lose their jobs.  If they don't understand the information that they are acknowledging , they should ask questions.  However. this writer has seldom seen organizations set aside time to answer the questions.  Even less frequently does the organization arrange for the employees to have extra time to discuss and digest the documents.   In short, the staff member usually signs the document not knowing exactly what is being "acknowledged".

And the kicker?  The documents in question usually deal with things like ethics and legality.  Being required to sign something that you do not fully understand under the threat of losing one's job.  Hmmmmm…  That sounds like coercion.  Is that legal?  I know it's not ethical.

No matter.  At least the CEO's tail is covered.
