Schizophrenegenic: Something that causes or promotes Schizophrenia. In the late 1970’s several highly regarded family therapists espoused the idea that mixed or conflicting messages, primarily from the patient’s mother, caused Schizophrenia. Perhaps most notable among those theorists was Jay Haley, who has long since recanted.
